Fine Jewellery

Unlike fashion jewellery, when it comes to owning items made wholly of precious metals and with gemstones, you would look to buy fine jewellery. You’ve no doubt seen many examples both on the High Street and online of fine jewellery and perhaps have admired a few pieces. But, if you want to purchase items that are of high quality and made to your exact specifications, it makes sense to deal with a designer-maker such as Mike Shorer Jewellery.

From platinum three-stone diamond rings through to 25-carat Tanazinte pendants, I’ve created a plethora of fine jewellery items that will always look stunning and eventually become timeless pieces.

Fine versus fashion jewellery: what’s the difference?

It’s likely you’ll have come across some jewellery outlets offering fashion or costume jewellery. So, what exactly is the difference between that and fine jewellery?

Well, fine jewellery describes items like rings, necklaces, earrings, and other jewellery pieces made of precious metals. Typically, jewellery items that fall into that category get crafted out of gold, sterling silver, or platinum to name a few examples. Such items will usually incorporate gemstones set into them like diamonds.

Fashion or costume jewellery refers to items made from base metals like iron, copper, aluminium or nickel. They often incorporate ‘simulated’ stones such as cubic zirconia and Swarovski crystals.

Fine jewellery is almost always more expensive to buy than fashion jewellery items for several reasons. First of all, the material costs of fine jewellery are higher. Secondly, fashion jewellery is aimed at a market where consumers don’t mind about the longevity of their items. And, third of all, fashion jewellery is usually mass-produced, often in the Far East where manufacturing processes are significantly cheaper than in the West.

With all that in mind, why does it make sense to opt for fine jewellery? Well, such pieces are long-lasting and seldom tarnish if taken care of correctly. And even if fine jewellery items were to get damaged, they can get repaired. That is not always the case with fashion jewellery.

Another reason to buy fine jewellery is that they are a good investment. As the price of precious metals goes up, so too will the value of items that were constructed out of them. And last, but not least, fine jewellery tends to be more attractive and boast that “wow” factor over fashion jewellery.
